Aussie summer nights are coming. Here's what research suggests actually helps, what's mostly marketing, and which pillows we'd look at if you run hot.

The honest bit first

A 2025 meta-analysis of cooling bedding (pillows, mattress toppers and the like) found it can change body or skin temperature, but showed no clear differences in sleep measures, and the evidence was low to very low certainty (Pasquier 2025, PMID 39708549) (evidence). So "cooling" products may feel nicer. Just don't expect miracles.

👉 Take the 2-minute pillow quiz. Tick "I run hot" and we'll weight cooler materials, but still match the height to how you sleep.

Free and cheap wins (do these first)

  1. Cool the room. A fan, airflow and blocking afternoon sun do more than any pillow.
  2. Breathable pillowcase. Linen or cotton percale lets more air through than dense sateen.
  3. Lighter layers. Swap the doona for a sheet on the hottest nights.
  4. Humid nights: in one tiny lab study of nine men at 32 °C and 80% humidity, a cooled pillow made a difference (Okamoto-Mizuno 2003, PMID 12750972). It measured sleep stages, body temperature and sweating (evidence).
