What research says helps, what's mostly marketing, and which pillows to try if you run hot.
The honest bit first
A 2025 meta-analysis found cooling bedding (pillows, toppers and the like) can change body or skin temperature but showed no clear differences in sleep measures; the evidence was low to very low certainty (Pasquier 2025, PMID 39708549) (evidence). "Cooling" products may feel nicer; just don't expect miracles.
👉 Take the 2-minute quiz: tick "I run hot" to weight cooler materials; height still matches how you sleep.
Free and cheap wins (do these first)
- Cool the room. A fan, airflow and blocking afternoon sun do more than any pillow.
- Breathable pillowcase. Linen or cotton percale lets more air through than dense sateen (pillowcase guide).
- Lighter layers. Swap the doona for a sheet on the hottest nights.
- Humid nights: in one tiny lab study of nine men at 32 °C and 80% humidity, a cooled pillow made a difference (Okamoto-Mizuno 2003, PMID 12750972). It measured sleep stages, body temperature and sweating (evidence).

Ranked by material and design (gel, latex, ventilated foam). We haven't lab-tested temperatures. Full reasoning: Best pillow for hot sleepers.
Myth check
- "Cooling pillows fix bad sleep." Not shown in trials (see above).
- "Silk regulates temperature." Silk feels cool to touch; regulation claims are unproven.
- "Higher thread count is cooler." Usually the opposite. Dense sateen can sleep warmer than percale.
